You've just left the salon with gorgeous, fresh color. Now what? The products you use and habits you adopt in the weeks after your appointment make all the difference between color that fades quickly and color that stays vibrant for months.
Step 1: Wait Before Washing
Resist the urge to wash your hair for at least 48–72 hours after your color appointment. This allows the cuticle to fully close and the color molecules to set, resulting in longer-lasting vibrancy.
Step 2: Switch to Sulfate-Free
Sulfates strip color. Period. Invest in a professional-grade, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair. Your color—and your wallet—will thank you.
Step 3: Weekly Deep Conditioning
Color processing opens the hair cuticle, which can lead to dryness. A weekly deep conditioning mask restores moisture, improves elasticity, and enhances shine. Apply to damp hair, leave for 10–15 minutes, and rinse.
Step 4: Heat Protection—Always
Never pick up a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling wand without applying heat protectant first. Heat accelerates color fade and causes damage to already-processed hair. Look for protectants that guard up to 450°F.
Step 5: UV Protection
Sun exposure fades color just like it fades fabric. Use a UV-protectant spray or wear a hat during prolonged sun exposure. Many leave-in conditioners now include UV filters—double duty for busy days.
